I used your online “Good Dealer Bad Dealer” to help me decide on which dealer to go to for service on my Yamaha SECA II. I read a good review of Billerica Motorsports in Massachusetts and decided to go there. I was immediately impressed. Yes, their selection isn’t the best… but the service is outstanding. And they seem to be very knowledgeable.

The guys there are very honest – I mean *really* honest… Joe helped me save on repairs by telling me how to do my own diagnostics. Then he made a gasket order before I even brought the bike in just in case the fix was that simple (so that I could get my bike back in time for my day at the Penguin Racing School). Then, my husband and I purchased a utility ATV through them and they suggested the lower end model because of our needs… they never tried to push us into the higher end, more expensive models.

So I will STRONGLY Recommend (and be a long-time customer of) Billerica Motorsports in Massachusetts: Billerica Motorsports & Marine. Thanks for helping me find them!

I grew up pretty nearby this shop, but I didn't own a motorcycle until I moved out of Quincy. My natural inclination was to go to a shop close by me which, at that time, meant either Arlington or Somerville. However, after stopping into SSMS one day, just to look around, I was so amazed at how nice everyone was, that I decided to bring my bike there for its next tune-up. I have been going there ever since. It's a longer ride for just a tune-up or an inspection, but it's worth it.

The staff in the shop is really friendly, and they always ask if you need help finding anything. They also make a habit of giving recommendations about gear, parts, etc if you're not sure. By this, I mean they don't just upsell you. They offer real advice. Everyone I've met there has a great interest in bikes, and they're good at answering questions.

The staff in the service dept. is the same. Whenever I bring my bike in, I feel confident I'm not getting screwed. I get a call if something doesn't look right, and when I pick my bike up, I usually get a detailed explanation of my service receipt. All work and parts are accouted for before they ask for the cash. I think someone in there actually called me "sir" once. Go figure.

Good customer service goes a long way with me, and in a business sometimes better known for its bad attitudes, these guys really shine. I have recommended SSMS to all of my friends, and I will certainly continue to do so.

This is a highly recommended dealer and repair shop. Carlton the Owner is very fair and knowledgeable. I have been bringing my bike to him for over 10 years now, and have never been disappointed. If there was ever an emergency or problem, he would work personally on a bike himself. I know of no other Dealership that you would see this type of commitment to customer service. All of my friends have been brought there and have been pleased with the quality and service that they have received from Anderson Cycle Works. They Sell brand new Yamaha bikes, ATVs, and Snowmobiles, but they repair any. Hence them being responsible for the repairs and maintenance of my Honda over the past 10 plus years. So two thumbs up in my opinion.

I recently purchased my first bike a couple of weeks ago and let me tell you I looked everywhere for both new and used. Because I was looking for a sport bike, I was leaning toward buying new because of the fact that I knew that the bike would not be beat on. I had read some reviews on Windmill Cycles in the past and while I agree that on certain bikes their prices may be on the high end, they are pretty comparable to other dealers. There are a few differences that I found with Windmill Cycles that no dealer in the area can match. First, they let me put the bike on layaway. Layaway! That’s unheard of everywhere else. Second, they give a one year warranty on a used bike with the option to purchase an extended warranty. Other dealerships you can only get that with a new bike. Usually a 30 day warranty on a used bike is what I found to be the standard. Third, I researched the book value of my bike and found Windmill’s price to be $200 over that price. Big deal! Just the warranty alone is worth it and the fact that I can store it in a heated warehouse for up to six months while I slowly pay off the bike was the clincher. I did try to knock the price down knowing there wasn’t much room to play with anyways. The salesman, Danny Fana was the best salesman that I have ever dealt with, bike or car. He told me that they really could not come down in the price or I would lose the warranty. However, they gave the choice of either two basic helmets or one Scorpion helmet worth about $140 dollars. I got the Scorpion helmet of course. To make a long story short, if you’re in the market for a slightly used bike with all of the benefits that I described then Windmill Cycles is the place for you. Do your homework on the internet and at other dealerships and you’ll find yourself there. By the way, I bought a 2001 Katana 750 with 2600 miles (yeah, a can of tuna) and I can’t wait to ride it in March 2005. Happy hunting! Hope my experience helps anyone who was not sure of this dealer.

I took delivery of a 2004 Suzuki GS500F after calling around to several dealers looking for an end-of-model-year blue one at a decent out-the-door price. A couple of dealers wanted to run a credit check before they would even talk to me while others wouldn't return phone calls or emails. I called Suzuki of Swansea, a smaller dealer not too far from where I work in Providence, and they had my bike in stock. They gave me a great out-the-door price, were low key in sales approach, and made the whole buying experience as stress-free as it should be. No attitude here. The bike was perfectly prepped for delivery (clean, fully charged battery, inspected) and they went out of their way to properly secure it in a U-Haul trailer (took 2 of their mechanics) for a long drive home. They installed a tank pad for free and gave me some better tie-downs without charging me. They definitely don't nickel-and-dime you there. I worked mostly with Jay, who is in sales, but the whole staff was great. Definitely recommended.

At the beginning of the season, I purchased some tires on-line and was looking for someone to put them on my ZX-9R locally. Also the brakes had a lot of meat on them, but, the fluid was low and I didn’t have the original bottle so I wanted them to drain the fluid and replace it also. Every shop told me at least two weeks. The current local Kawi dealer, Flamingo Motorsports, told me over a month to do it! The last local dealer was Al’s Cycle. When Al Sr. passed away, the family sold off the Kawi franchise to Flamingo. Well some bad water went under the bridge with Al Sr’s family and Al Jr left them. Jr was their main mechanic all his life and knew a Kawi INSIDE AND OUT. After he left, he opend up his own repair shop. Now talking to him on the phone can be a little unusual, especially when he’s in the middle of working on a bike. So I call him up, ask him if he can do it, and tell him that I’ll pick up the bike the next day. He says no prob and bring it down. So I bring the bike to him and he tells me “Come back in a couple hours.”. I’m like “Al, I told you on the phone I’ll pick it up tomorrow afternoon so you don’t have to rush that much.”. He’s like oh ya that’s right.

So the next day after work I go to pick up the bike. He did the work that I wanted done perfectly even though it was minor. Here’s the kicker. He give me the bill for changing over both tires, balancing them, and doing the brake work that I wanted……..$65.00! WHAT A DEAL! And he even lubed my chain for me. Knowing his Kawi background and now good prices, I WILL DEFINITELY go back to him for further service if needed.

Now I am stuck with a bike in my dads name. The whole point of me getting this bike was to gain some credit and now im not. I also brought it in there to get serviced and again crap. They told me to pick it up on a day and I went and they didnt even look at it yet. They lost all the papers and I had to fill everything out again. By the way my bike is a kawasaki zr7s. I purchase my second motorcycle from Windmill cycle because of two reasons. First reason is that it’s the only motorcycle dealer in Boston Area that has a LAYAWAY option. Secondly I receive a better value on the trade that I would have received at other dealers. My second experience was one of fun. From the salesman (Joel), the Parts Guy (Bobby) and mechanic(Roy) was all knowledgeable and professional in their duties. The Manager (Chris) was a gentleman and the front desk lady(Kim) was a beauty to see. Windmill Cycles did not pressure me in doing anything that I did not want to do and their sales people does not get commission so obviously no pressure here.. When I picked up my bike (Kawasaki 750 Vulcan – 1995) there was a problem and I send an email to the sales team. In less that 3 hrs, the owner called me. In 28 hrs they send a truck for my motorcycle. Problem resolve and motorcycle returned to me and operational again in 2 days. The thrilling part of this encounter that there was no cost to me.

I had fun doing business with Windmill Cycles and I would tell anyone looking for a dealer they can trust to go to this dealer. Their Sales people does not bullshit you and the service is fantastic.

Keep up the good work Windmill Cycles – I will definitely be back for 1100 cc in the future.

It's funny how word about a bad deal gets around. Back when I took the MSF course, my instructor was asked by a fellow student Where's a good place to get a bike?. He said Riverside and South Shore MotorSports are great dealers. And STAY AWAY from Parkway Cycle and Greater Boston Motorsports. They are more concerned with $ than with riding.

A few months later, I went out window shopping for bikes. I knew Parkway had a large inventory, so went by to use their stock as a reference library. I parked my car and start walking to the front door. As I did some, some angry looking kid comes toward me. He comes right up to me and asks, Are you planning on buying a bike here?. I said I wasn't sure. He then goes on to tell me that I should turn around and walk away from the dealership because they are assholes who will rip you off at any chance they have. He also tells me that he used to work there, and how he got dicked over as an employe. He also said I should goto Riverside or South Shore. So I go inside to poke around. A salesperson is on me within seconds. I tell him that I'm just looking and any sales pitch, no matter how low pressure is going to make me walk out the door and never come back. He backs off. I leave a few minutes later.

Over time, I have returned to Parkway many times. All for the same reasons above. I usually take friends who are getting into the bike world over there for reference. Being that Parkway is one of the bigger dealers in the area, they have a lot of on-floor stock. I also take them over to see what a bad sales pitch looks like.

In the fall I took a friend over who was just looking to get his first 600cc sport bike. He had never riden a bike at all before (don't worry, we talked him into getting a used beater-bike first). He wanted to see what they looked like, and what they felt like to sit on. They salesperson who attacked us was about 19 or 20. He had been riding for 9 months (not including winter time-off). He knew a lot about selling, but next to nothing about motorcyles. My friend, who was looking at bikes, complained about feeling cramped on the 600's (he is 6'5). The sales rep told him Just get a 1000cc. At this point I was HORRIFIED. I can not think of a more reprehensible, dangerous, and wreckless suggestion than to tell a newbie rider to get a 1000cc sportbike as a first ride. Doing so boarders on criminal.

Two weeks ago I and the same friend went back to look at stuff during there spring madness blowout sale. My friend now has a 2004 R6 that he got from Riverside. The second they saw he had a bike they were trying to sell him every kind of aftermarket part imaginable. I had driven my car, so I wasn't in riding gear. They assumed I didn't ride and new nothing about bikes. I played along for fun (it's so much fun fucking with asshole sales people). The salesman would not let out of his sight, and was on us like a hawk the whole time we were there.

In short, if you can deal with the sales people Parkway is a great place to window shop. They have lots of stuff. Just don't give them a cent of your money.

I Will Recommend North Reading. I will make this short. I was interested in a new bike last year and started visiting dealers. I went to Greater Boston Motorsports and Parkway Cycle. After 6 months of torturing myself I decided to get serious and called around to all of the local Honda dealers just asking them for the price they would part with the bike for. The bike listed for $10,600. I got ranges as high as over $11,100 from Greater Boston Motorsports (don't know what the extra money was for) and as low as $9000 from Fred Sr. For $10 I bought a sheet detailing the dealer cost and all of the rebates associated with the bike so I knew that it was a good price. I went down the next day filled out the paperwork and he even let me pay with a personal check. When I asked him why his price was so much lower he looked at me honestly and said that he needed to get rid of it because he had a few in stock. My plates were in the next day and I drove off. It was that simple.

Andrew G. Oltsch - WILL definitely Recommend:
Ronnie's of Adams
150 Howland Ave
Adams, MA 01220
Phone: (413) 743-0715
www.ronnies.com

In the fall of 2002, I was looking for a black 2002 Yamaha YZF600R, hoping to find a "leftover" black 2002 at a reduced price. Jerry Lemay of Ronnie's responded to my email that he had one in stock, and he was there to greet me the day I said I'd come by to see the bike. The bike was not in the "main" showroom, but in an adjacent showroom building. It looked as if they'd polished it for inspection. Mr. Lemay was pleasant and informative, and seemed prepared to match the price ("I guarantee you'll be satisfied.") named by an affiliated shop (I'd first gone to the affiliate in Pittsfield because I'd mixed up my emails).

I soon made up my mind I wanted the bike and called to let Mr. Lemay know- He gave me the name of his associate, Wayne, who'd be there the day I planned to try to stop in to make a deposit. Wayne appeared to be waiting to greet me when I arrived (from a 2 1/2 hour drive away) and we went through the business process, matching the very fair price I'd wanted. No problems, no strings. We went to look the bike over, and he described the break-in process and theory with clarity and gave me the owner's manual to take with me. I was very impressed with his knowledge and manner.

When I was ready, in a couple months, to pay for the bike and arrange approximate delivery date, I spoke with several Ronnie's staff people: their finance and warranty person Kevin (I believe), who reviewed available extended warranty and service plans for me to consider, clearly and without pressure; again briefly with sales person Jerry Lemay; with Stacey Arnold, the General Manager who ran all the documents, answered my questions, and helped ease my new-bike anxiety by her pleasant competency. I was introduced to the Service Manager, Tim, and looked at the bike another time.

When it came to April and delivery time, I'd been reading about the new Pirelli Diablo tires-which sounded terrific, and would be just the ticket for when I get caught in the rain (as I did on several across-Massachusetts rides during 2002 on my Kawasaki EX500R). I researched for a very low Internet price, and then asked Jerry if Ronnie's could match the price. They did, with just a fee of $75 above that to remove the stock tires and install and balance the Pirellis on the new bike! (When the tires arrived there, I got a message from the parts person that they were in "Come and pick 'em up!", and I felt I had to alert my salesman so the tires could be mounted.) Importantly, the shop accommodated my request to deliver the bike -quite a few miles from the dealership- to my sister's house, so I could take a Peter Pan bus across the state, get the bike, and ride it home across Massachusetts. No hassles, no extra fee, just delivery where and when I needed it. They also accommodated her busy schedule, so's to deliver when it was convenient for us.

At first service time, after only a few seconds' thought, Tim "squeezed me in" to the service schedule on just a couple days' notice. When I picked up the bike, ready before noon, he explained a bit about the carburetor synchronization I'd requested, and a few other things.

[The only downside was that when I got home around 150 miles later, I found that one of the two nuts (which serve as a 'locknut') on the left swingarm endplate (part of the chain-adjustment system) was missing and the remaining nut and the plate were loose. I conclude that the nuts weren't properly tightened and locked against one another during service. Also, about 350 miles later, but perhaps related to the lubrication of the speedometer cable at time of service, the speedometer cable came out of the fork fitting. ("Why is my speedometer reading 'zero'? I do seem to be moving at a good clip, here...") Since it took many turns to fully tighten it after I poked it back into the housing, I suspect that it wasn't fully secured after it was lubed. Could have unscrewed itself over a few hundred miles, I suppose...]

But in summary:
The entire process of buying this bike from Ronnie's of Adams was a thorough pleasure. Everyone was pleasant, thorough, professional in the best sense of the word. They met my various requests, none of which were terribly unusual, but still everyone was most accommodating, and helpful. I'll see how things go, as I get other service done in the future, but for now I give Ronnie's staff a very happy "thumb up". Oh- and the YZF600R is a wonderful motorcycle!! ("Awesome" in Black!!)

Additions:
6/5/03: I happened to be reading entries in an Internet YZF600R website forum- someone noted that parts could be ordered from ronnies.com! I decided to order a selection of small parts from Ronnie's, to have on hand as spares for the YZF600R: some screws, spring nuts in several sizes, and grommets particular to the YZF. I placed an online order, using a very helpful 'microfiche'-like website feature. The order was promptly and accurately filled. Yet another good reason to do business with Ronnie's.
6/6/03: Well, I've learned why the headlight on my YZF600R seemed even more useless than the descriptions on the Thundercats website: With my first bike, a Kawasaki EX500R, North Reading Motorsports/ Trailblazer Kawasaki had apparently not adjusted the headlight (from how the factory left it) prior to delivery to me -and I'd paid to have the bike inspected, too- so the motorcycle was delivered with the light aimed right at the ground in front of the front wheel, leaving me in the dark during a long ride- scary.
On my YZF6000R, from Ronnie's, the bike had apparently not had its headlight adjusted after factory installation, leaving me in relative dark during a long ride, because the headlamp was "aimed" up at the treetops. There was some faint illumination of the road on low beam, but switching to high made a black wedge appear right in front of the bike- scary! It took a lot of screwdriver turns to lower the headlight down to appropriate aiming.

I pick up the bike around closing time and start to ride it home. after riding a few minutes the engine seizes and i'm stuck in downtown malden. THERE WAS NO OIL IN THE BIKE! I grab a two quarts from a nearby gas station and toss them in just trying to get home. Still no go, totally locked up.

I go by the shop and tell them what happened. they pick up the bike. I figure, okay...it happened...no big deal, just make it right. now the service manager Frank is trying to make me pay to the damages!!! I just paid them about $700 bucks for the other work and now they are trying to screw me! is that how they get more business? mess up someone's bike so they have to go back?

I forgot to mention- I had to wait a month to bring it in, and then it took them a month to get it back to me. the service manager Frank is no good. if your boys make a mistake, own up to it. run a business right. I would never recommend this shop to anyone.

Here is a rebuttal to the above post
from Frank Grasso, Service Manager, Parkway Cycle.

This is in response to Conor McGuire's post. What Mr. McGuire neglected to relate in his post are the following facts: The motorcycle he refers to is a 1982 Yamaha XJ750 with 34, that's 34 THOUSAND MILES ON THE ODOMETER. When Mr. McGuire brought the bike in for service the engine was idling extremely high due to the carburetors being mis-adjusted & partially blocked. This was causing a very lean condition which leads to overheating. I do not know how long Mr. McGuire rode the bike in this condition before he brought it in for repair. The problems were diagnosed & repairs were made. The technician that performed the work ran the bike on the bench for 15 minutes. He then rode the bike for an additional 15-20 minutes. If there was not oil in the engine we certainly would have found out in that time period. Mr. McGuire stated that the engine seized, however when we brought the bike back to the shop what we found was that the starter motor would no longer start the bike. We bump started the bike & it started & ran well. Given the age of the starter motor & the lean (hot) running conditions it had experienced we did not find this to be an unusual occurrence. We also found the clutch to be slipping badly & we recommended to Mr. McGuire replacement of the cam chain tensioner. After speaking with Mr. McGuire we came to a mutual agreement which was that we would locate a good used starter motor, replace the clutch springs, driven & drive plates & install a new cam chain tensioner at a total cost to him of $123.87. That was the cost of the tensioner only, this is on a machine with 34 THOUSAND MILES ON THE ODOMETER. The rest of the work we did not charge one penny for even though as I stated before, the bike had RUN A MINIMUM OF 30 MINUTES before Mr. McGuire rode it for several miles. This was done to satisfy a customer, we service many motorcycles here and always strive to do our best, we stand behind our repairs and try to be fair in all aspects. At the time Mr. McGuire thought we had come to a fair agreement, I do not know why he now chooses to berate us.

Thank you,
Frank Grasso

The Manager states that the tires were unsafe. He demonstrated by using a flash light and show me that the tires were dry rotting. I became scared as he consider my safety to be priority. He said his conscience would bother him if my tires blow out. I spoke with other friends and they said "NO OTHER DEALER" did that when they do their inspection. This dealer is good. In october I went to these people to get a 15000 mile service done on my 2000 ZX6R. When I got the bike back they had over filled the oil and scratshed the muffler, I went back and got them to replace the muffler and drain some of the oil (the mechanic said that the oil was correct, then he said that a lot of their clients are black kids who do long wheelies, so they put a little exta oil in the engine)

When I finally got my bike back it was leaking oil out of the valve cover, as it was now obvious that I was dealing with a ham fisted butcher, I went back to them to try and get my money back. I was told in no uncertain terms to F*** off (the mechanic claimed that the bike developed a leak on its own even though it had never lost a drop of oil until they went to work on it).

I ended up taking the bike to South Shore Motorsports, it cost me over $500 to get the bike back on the road. All Extra Performance had done, was done wrong or not done at all. I'm now suing these people trying to get some of my money back but I dont hold out much hope.

I know they are not dealers, but I'd like to help anyone else in the Boston area to avoid these ripoff artists. I've heard a lot of stories about them, too late to help me but I might be able to spare some one else the same experience.

I recently purchased a 1991 K100RS from Vermont and brought it to Duncan for service. This place is a little more like a clubhouse than a high-tech service facility, so don't expect pretty decorations and a spotless floor. Nonetheless, Duncan knows these bikes well. I stopped by on a Monday afternoon to schedule an appointment and he had me in on my choice of Thursday or Friday. On Friday I dropped the bike off and walked to the South Acton train station (convenience - another benefit of Duncan's). The bike was finished by the end of the day. Duncan called and let me know that he would ride out to pick me up at the train station so I wouldn't have to walk!

Due to a crisis at work, I couldn't pick it up Friday. Duncan stored the bike inside for me until Monday night when I came to pick it up. During the day, the temperature had dropped from about 50 down to just north of 30, with a strong wind. I was going to buy a heated vest right on the spot, but Duncan didn't have any in stock. Instead, he loaned me his own heated vest so I could get home. Where else can you get that kind of attention?

Well, after reading the scathing review I've recently seen posted (for understandable reasons), I feel some balance is in order. I'd give the shop a reasonable "Will Recommend" based on limited experience.

I first visited the shop in January, talked with Fred, Sr., about a 2002 Kawasaki Ninja EX500. He impressed me with a mild, but well-informed sales approach. No pressure of any kind, just helpful information. I returned in March, as he suggested, put a deposit down, secured a price I was satisfied with. Later when I was ready to arrange delivery, I hadn't even taken the RiderCourse yet, so I anxiously asked about having the bike delivered to my house in Arlington. No problem. Delivered with an inspection sticker!

Later, I priced the 600 mile service at Brockton Cycle, and at Fred's. He cut their price in half- not as a response to my quoting a price. His shop just happened to charge half of Brockton's quote. On a Saturday, I called and asked if it were possible to leave it for the 600 mile service that day, have the work done on Monday, pick it up after work. Although I don't think this was in any way ideal for them, Fred again said sure. (In fact, the guy at the service counter seemed a bit surprised.) So I got the work done to fit my schedule.

I've been very pleasantly greeted and dealt with whenever I've been in the shop, and I'd have little reason to go to another dealer for another Kawasaki, unless there were a big bike-price differential. It's a small shop, so I don't expect them to go broke trying to compete with huge Brockton Cycle, or Valley Motorsports, in Northampton. But I bet Fred would give it a shot.

Downside:
1) my bike was delivered to my door, yep, but the front brake lever wires weren't plugged in = no light from front lever use. I've since seen a number of EX500's in different shops with these wires hanging loose under the inner throttle handle end, so I guess the factory doesn't connect them, but this is a serious oversight, especially since the shop both "prepared" and "inspected" the bike, putting the sticker on.
2) the headlamp was aimed a couple feet in front of the bike, as I discovered when I did my first ride back home from 137 miles away, in the dark. Bad oversight. Luckily, I recalled seeing the manual's picture of where the adjustment is, and stopped to raise the lamp, which took a LOT of turning of the adjuster wheel, so I can fairly say the shop did no check of this at all.

Would I buy another bike from them? Sure. When I was considering a ZX6R, I stopped in a couple times to look them over and briefly talk with Fred, Sr. Again: mild, pleasant, no pressure. Just information to help me decide what I wanted to do.

A week ago, on a Saturday, I drove about an hour to North Reading Honda Kawasaki to see a 2001 Honda Magna I found on their website. I met Fred, Jr., who showed me the bike (it looked fine, but needed to be cleaned up), and he quoted me a price of $4800-. I asked if he had done ANY work on it since it had come in, he said no. The price was fair, but I wanted to check another bike that day, and so took his card, and told him I would call him back by the end of the day to let him know whether I would take the bike. He said fine. I called back later in the day, reached him, and had him put the bike on hold. I left my name and number, and told him I would be down Monday after work, possibly close to closing time for him, to pick it up. He suggested I get out of work early, and call him to let him know when I was on the way. I did both: got out of work early, and called him to let him know I was coming in.

When I arrived, I had to hunt around for Fred, Jr., despite the fact that I called, and told him I was there to buy the bike. The bike had my name and number on it. He had me sit down, went into his office to get the paperwork, and came out after about 10 minutes. Then he told me that he suddenly could not sell me the bike for the price he quoted me. I said, "Excuse me?" and asked why not. He said that he checked the price of the bike online, and that based on that, he had to sell it for more. And that if he were to sell it for what he quoted me, he would only be making a few hundred dollars on the bike (HEL-LO, he told me they did NOTHING to it, and it wasn't even being displayed in the showroom, so I see no justification for a huge markup...). I pointed out that he had about 72 hours to have done that research, and that he also had my name and number, and the same amount of time to let me know, before I wasted my time in coming down. He then said that apparently, his father (Fred, Sr., who is ALSO a scumbag) apparently was in the mood on Saturday to have let it go at that price, but not today. (Even though I notified them the same day the price was offered, and the place was closed sunday...this was the next business day) I asked to speak to his father. He refused to get Fred, Sr.

Clearly, they were trying to get more money out of me. They knew I wanted the bike, they knew I was coming to pick it up, and they had every chance to tell me that they needed to sell it for more. At NO time did Fred, Jr. say he misspoke, or that he was sorry for basically LYING, nor for wasting my time. They wanted me in the store, having already invested time and effort into getting there, and hoped that I would simply agree to their jacking up the price at the last minute. It is clear to me that he INTENTIONALLY told me the low price, and was trying to soak me for more money at the last minute.

I thought about it: Did I want the bike? Yes. But could I get one somewhere else, and for a similar price? Sure. And why would I want ONE PENNY of MY hard-earned money supporting this family of dirtbags, or rewarding their complete lack of integrity? I wouldn't. I thanked him for wasting my time, and left.

Please post this so others aren't deceived by the slimy Fred's.. and so Fred, Jr. and Fred, Sr. will think hard about trying to screw the next person who walks in to their junky little store. The bike, incidentally, is still for sale.

I had gone in to buy a pair of goggles one fine day in June, and left owning a brand new ZX7R. First of all, I didn't get hounded by sales until I asked about that Kawasaki "special" financing program. After a few minutes, I was approved, and they were able to easily answer all sorts of questions I had pertaining to the program. Since it was late in the afternoon, I couldn't take delivery of the bike (insurance agency/RMV was already closed), and would have had to wait for like 2 or 3 days until they prepped the bike. Since I was about to leave for Florida for a week, I asked if I could have the bike earlier, and they accommodated me, and by 12 noon the next day, I was riding out the door....! There's nothing worse than having to wait for something after shelling out big $ for it, I guess they understand that concept, and thus accommodated me accordingly, way to go!

They will order anything for you if they don't have it in stock. I ordered a Joe Rocket Atomic jacket and it came in 2 days. One of the many times I was there I was admiring the Aprilia Mille. When co-owner/salesmen by the name of Chad came over and gave me a load of information on the bike. He asked me if I wanted to take it for a ride. Of course I did. He provided an Aprilia leather jacket, gloves and helmet for me to wear. We went on a 20 minute ride. Talking about awesome service!!! He was not the least bit pushy about making a sale. He in fact suggested that I wait to look at the 2003 models when they come in. The other co-owner is Randy who is just as informative and helpful. The certified mechanic(forgot his name) is superb too, he told me to bring my bike there for service anytime. He knows his sh&%* too. I strongly recommend this dealer to anyone. I want people to know that mike is the best person to take a bike to if you want a job done and done right. In Feb I bought a 1991 Kawasaki ZX-11 Ninja from Windmill Cycles in N. Dartmouth (which I would also highly recommend) and the day after I bought this bike I had an accident which totalled the whole right side and I was in desperate need of all new plastic, engine covers, exhaust, and brakes. I went to 6 different Kawasaki dealers in my area (Central MA) to get prices for all parts, and also went onto the internet to get a rough idea of how much it would cost. Most places were either higher or same price as bikebandits.com. So I went to see Mike at A-1 and even though he had ordered me brand new riding gear (Joe Rocket jacket & pants, and gloves and helmet) he was willing to hold onto all things ordered and order me all my new parts. When the parts came in, the parts should have totalled around $1700.00 and this is what I expected to pay, but the total came to $1300.00 and this was a savings of $400.00 that I desperately appreciated. He has always provided excellent service both with his pricing, and his workmanship, and I feel it would be hard for anyone to beat his service. He looks out to save his customers money, in addition to also needing money to keep his business, and I feel that proves his excellent customer service. He is very knowledgable, and doesnt mind taking the time to explain either how things work, or what could be or should be done to improve the performance and safety of any bike.

In winter '02 I had the experience of buying a 2002 Triumph Bonneville from Performance Cycles, and more recently had them do the bike's first (500 mi) service, so I thought I'd relate the pros and cons of this transaction. Overall, I'd rate the deal as excellent but with a few glitches that were somewhat frustrating. To begin with, I'd say that Bill Morrow is definitely one of the most friendly, helpful and conscientious bike salesmen I have met, and the other staff and service people I dealt with seemed equally so. I ordered the bike and options about 6 weeks in advance, since some parts had to be ordered from the UK. Price-wise, Performance Cycles was about the same as every other dealer I checked out - Bonnies are in short supply, especially baby-blue ones, and I paid close to list. They did give me a slight break on the prep charge and threw in a free inspection and a disc lock. All the paperwork went smoothly and the bike was delivered on schedule (delivery on a truck to my door was included, which was a big plus for me!), ready to ride. However, a few problems became apparent. Due to what I think was a staffing or scheduling problem, the alarm system was hurriedly installed and not working properly, and a few extras (tank pads, disc lock, spare keys) were not delivered. The extras were quickly shipped to me, but the alarm (a "Triumph " alarm actually made by DataTool) turned out to be a major pain. First, it took 2 weeks to schedule the pickup of the bike. Then, it took 2 weeks (and several phone inquiries) to get the repairs underway, and finally, the shop said that the alarm was defective. I asked them to rip it out and give me a refund, which was cheerfully done. You can imagine my frustration at being bike-less for 2 weeks! This problem marred what was otherwise a pretty good experience. The bike has run beautifully for its first 1000 miles, and I am quite happy with it. Also I should mention that when I scheduled the 500-mi. maintenence, I got a prompt appointment and the work was done on the same day, as promised, with the bike performing somewhat better afterwards. So I don't think the above alarm problem reflects negatively on their service dept. (I just don't think they have much experience with Triumph alarms, though.) The service guys I talked to were helpful and friendly.

So in conclusion, so far I like Performance Cycles quite a bit and would recommend that prospective buyers at least check them out. Triumph buyers in particular would do well to talk to Bill Morrow, as he is a Triumph enthusiast and has a reputation for being knowledgeable about this brand.

Hey there!! I was just on your website and just have been dying for a way to let people know about Windmill Cycles they are located at 90 Faunce Corner Road in North Dartmouth, MA 02747 their phone number is 800-292-5322... I had found the motorcycle of my dreams (don't laugh now) it was a 1997 CBRF3 600 with the yellow and purple color scheme..I am a huge fan of the Honda CBR's anyway and those colors are what draws me to that particular year..Now I found it on their website listed for $6495.00...I went down there and he would only go as low as $6100. Now realizing I just looked at a 2001 CBRF4i at another dealer for $7100. I had no idea where he came up with such an inflated number...Mind you book value is at $5300 for that bike right now. But I did put a deposit on it because I was caught up in the color scheme and was going to get financing from my bank the next day..When I started talking to other riders I realized how insanely stupid I would be to pay at least $900 to much for this bike simply because of the color..I had found another one on line also and that dealer came down to $5400. So I went back the very next day to get my deposit back..Now the General Manager got a total attitude with me. Started yelling at me in front of other customers in the store and yelled at the guy to only give me 1/2 my deposit back...WHAT?? the bike was only off the floor for about 10hours..Give me a break..I can even understand that if he told me upfront, if I don't take delivery he would keep 1/2 the deposit but he didn't...That to me is just bad business..it is not what you say but how you say it..He was a total rude jackass to me!!! There is no need for that especially when he would of been robbing me on the price of the bike. Now I will never return there nor will I suggest anyone go to a place where they yell and disrespect their customers..Business is business. If someone else if offering a better price they will usually work with you to obtain your business but not this guy he just flew off the handle and gave me a hard time..I WILL NEVER EVER GO THERE AGAIN!!!! OH yeah there sales tactics suck too.. I had just walked in the door and over to the bike when a young kid on a cell phone came over and started telling the person on the phone he was going to come down with cash to buy this particular bike..The guy I was with said outloud a comment about that being a scam..The kid walked away and to the other side of the dealership where we over heard him saying the same thing while someone else was looking at a Harley..Come on now stop with the games already!!! I hope you post this so others will know to steer clear of them...thanks for your time.

Here is a rebuttal to the above post
from Michael Goes, the President of Windmill Cycles.

I have been in business for over 23 years and logged over 19000 motorcycle sales. I know of not one of those customers who is unhappy with either their experience or their purchase at Windmill Cycles. When I am made aware of any issues, I personally correct them and make sure that the customer is satisfied as I am now in the process of doing with Ms Whitefield, providing I can reach her after a year and a half. I return every customer telephone call and email promptly. If Ms.Whitefield had any concerns she should have asked to speak to the owner or manager or email us. The situation would have been amicably resolved immediately. We would not consistently do the business we do if it were not for our exemplary customer service.

Ms Whitefield visited our store back in March of 2002. Her experience here was not quite what she describes. Due to the Privacy Act, I cannot go into detail about her credit or transactions, however, I can tell you that her description of her experience here is grossly inaccurate. I have pulled her file and discovered which employee dealt with her. I would believe that that particular employee was probably rude to her, hence the reason his employment here lasted a total of 3 weeks. His customer service was simply not up to par. Had Ms Whitefield chose to bring this issue to the attention of management, it would have been resolved and she would have been satisfied.

Our policies are quite different from the average shop and sometimes they are misunderstood or not agreeable to some after the fact. For instance, we do not take deposits in the traditional sense. We sell "Options to Purchase" or time. Our policy states that the Option to Purchase a motorcycle here costs $50.00 per day. That money is non-refundable, however, 100% of it is credited towards their purchase. This appears to be Ms Whitefields major complaint. This policy is both posted at the point of purchase, explained in detail to the customer and signed off as agreed by the customer. All amounts paid over $50.00 per day are refundable in full. Example: a customer comes in to the store and finds a particular bike that they would like to buy. They decide purchase a three day option for $150.00 so they can think about it without the worry of it being sold out from under them. They do not have to tender any money whatsoever but the bike wil still be available for sale to another customer. If they do tender the $150.00 and the next day they decide that they do not want the bike, all of the remaining money (the $100.00) is immediately refunded.

We have found over the years for this to be both fair for the customer and the store. In the past, we used to take deposits and then sometimes the customer would disappear and we would be stuck holding the bike until we could reach the customer and refund the deposit. Other customers may have wanted that bike and could not buy it because we could not reach the original customer to find out his/her intentions. It would be different if we were selling new bikes and we could just grab an identical one from the warehouse but used bikes are unique, in mileage, color, accessories that have been added and et cetera.

In regard to pricing, well, we have never been accused of being low priced. In fact, we tell customers, that if they are strictly price shopping, we are probably not the store for them. However, many have found that the best price isn't necessarily the best deal. We do not charge any of the hidden fees commonly charged by most dealerships. All of our prices are clearly posted on our bikes and the price you agree upon is the price you pay. Nothing more. In regard to her comments on our sales tactics, they are untrue. We do not, and have never had any commissioned sales people here. There is absolutely no motive or benefit to anyone for playing such games as she describes. My employees make the same amount of money whether they sell one bike or a thousand.

Sincerely,
Michael Goes, Pres.
Windmill Cycles, Inc.

Both Al and Fred always seem to care about the customers who come in to their store. Since buying the bike, I continue to bring it there every year for a tuneup and other services. The service and parts departments are excellent. They seem to have everything you would need available and if for some reason they don't they get it there fast. I am writing to express my disgust and displeasure with Freeman Cycles, Beverly, MA, a dealer of both Moto Guzzis and BMW's. Please put this in the three strikes and you're out category! I was in the market for a new bike earlier this year and was interested in a Moto Guzzi. I talked to Rusty, the sales guy at Freeman, and asked about availability of a particular model. Despite two calls and a visit to the shop, I never heard back from him. Strike one. I eventually decided that I wanted to buy a BMW R1100R and inquired again at Freeman as to availability. This time I showed up at the shop and stalked the sales guy. When I cornered him, he summarily said that the R1100R's were not available, that the model (although current for the year) was to be discontinued, and that even if he called other dealers he could not get one. I knew from internet searches that the bikes were available and assumed that there just wasn't enough profit there for him to bother searching. Strike two. I called another local BMW dealer, Greater Boston Motorsports in Arlington, and asked there about availability of the BMW R1100R. They said right away that they could get one and came through with the bike a few weeks later. I bought it and have been very pleased. Well, it was time for the 500 mile service, and so (silly me) I called Freeman Cycles again, this time to see if they would perform the service. After a long delay, I got put through to service and talked to the mechanic that apparently was doing the service scheduling. I told him what I was looking for and, before I could finish my sentence, he asked me where I bought the bike. When I told him, he said in a surly voice, "Bring it to them. I'm not interested." I explained that I had actually tried to buy my bike through Freeman, but he said, "Yeah, I hear that all the time." Then he said, "I should hang up on you right now. That's what Skip, the owner, would do." After some back and forth, he confirmed that Freeman charges more than other dealers for bikes and, as a way to entice buyers, refuses to service bikes not bought there. In other words, if you don't pay their prices, don't expect any assistance. Strike three. Unresponsive, unpleasant, and overpriced. In a word: pathetic! I would not recommend Freeman Cycles.

www.baerscycle.com has also come though when we needed their help. And Joel in their parts department has really gone the extra mile in helping to serve our parts needs.

Boris RECOMMENDS GBM for parts. I never bought any bikes from them, I don't consider their staff really knowledgable and I don't think they have the best selection in Boston. However, parts people are pretty enthusiastic, if they don't carry the parts they'll order it, if they don't know they will find it and prices are much better than any other local shops. The best part is that they don't randomly screw you on misc items. If I buy something I did not do my homework on I know their price will be one of the lowest for local shops. Unlike some shops who slip in parts for $40 while GBM sells exactly the same thing for $12.

I would strongly recommend SkyCycle. I have purchased motorcycles from them and always found the follow-up and service work to be excellent. Recently, I took my bike in for service and a new rear tire. I also asked them to install a set of after-market foot pegs (bought elsewhere) while it was there. I dropped the bike off on a Thursday and planned to pick it up on Monday.

I stopped in on the following Monday and paid for the tire and other work and returned later to pick it up, only to discover that they hadn't installed the foot pegs. When I pointed this out to them, they said "can you give us about 15 minutes?" I said, "Sure" and they installed the pegs. When I went to pay for the installation, they said "There's no charge. We're sorry we didn't do it and that you had to wait."

This is typical of the way this dealer operates. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone buying a bike or looking for service!

As of the middle of October, the items had not arrived and I was going to be out of town for several months, so I asked them to mail the items to me. When I returned home, the touch-up paint was missing from the box. When I called them, they acted as if I were a mad lunatic who was lying to them and wouldn't help me further. I had also received a price quote from them for another larger part, their price was over $225. I got the same part from Manchester (CT not NH) Honda for $190. Apparently Motorsports sells their parts for above MSRP, and my impression is that most of their bikes are overpriced too. Given that their service is not so good either, I don't see much reason to do business there. For Honda parts in the future, I would probably do mail order or go to Sky Cycle.

I have been riding for over 25 years now and have owned more than 30 motorcycles. I purchased my used 1991 CBR1000F from Performance Cycles in early September of 1999. This was the seventh vehicle that I have bought from this shop, the first being a new GPZ750 purchased in 1982. Many of the employees, including Bill Morrow who is the salesperson who sold me the CBR, have been with the shop at least 10 to 15 years, which definitely tells you something. Everyone who works at Performance Cycles rides, and the guys really know their bikes. Anyone looking for Kawasaki, Yamaha or Triumph should definitely give them a call.

Despite the fact that the CBR had low miles and was in nearly mint shape, I was able to negotiate a good deal with Bill (I sold the bike the next Summer at a $400 profit after putting 5k miles on it). After riding the bike for a couple hundred miles, I was not completely happy with the off-idle carburetion so I took it back to them and they cleaned and adjusted the carbs, and also changed the clutch fluid, at no cost to me. This is typical of the treatment I have received from them over the years. The only major drawback to this shop is that they get extremely busy in the Spring, and since they're mere mortals you should plan your purchases and service work accordingly.

In the interest of full disclosure, I will admit that I did work at Performance Cycles for a brief time "just for fun", but at this time I am merely a satisfied customer. Definitely NOT a disgruntled ex-employee who got fired for bad performance!

Hey, just wanted to let you know I agree with Marcus entirely about Brockton Cycle. I didn't even have the luck you did with the sales staff.

I bought my 1999 R1 from them and what a mistake! As I'm sure you know, back then it was tough to get an R1 cause they were selling out everywhere. I did some research on pricing all over the state and found out that Brockton was taking deposits for bikes they said they'd have in March. The only reason I went with them is because they told me they would have the bike in March without a doubt and were $100 cheaper then the next best dealer's price. In January the bikes were priced at $10,400 at Brockton Cycle which at the time was $200 over MSRP. Let me tell you -- I should have spent the extra $100 and bought the bike anywhere else!

The term "two weeks" became a running joke with my friends. I called in March to see if the bike was in and they told me "No, two more weeks." So I waited the full two weeks and called again. "No, two more weeks." So I waited again and again I was told "Two more weeks." So then I told them I wanted to talk to someone who knew what was going on. They got someone on the phone who blamed everything on Yamaha and said Yamaha wasn't delivering the bikes as scheduled. The conversation ended again with "Two more weeks." (Now 2 months beyond what I was told). Meanwhile my buddies are riding and I've sold my GSX-R and have nothing.

Anyway, I bought into the "It's Yamaha's fault" excuse and waited some more. I think I would have been okay if it had been Brockton Cycle calling me with updates instead of me having to call them only to be disappointed again and again. But FINALLY I get a call from a sales guy who tells me my ride is in and that I can come down to get it.

So I'm pumped! I take off from work the next day and head to Brockton Cycle (1 hour from where I live) to take care of the paperwork and get my new bike! I get there and I'm told "Oh yeah, sorry but the title hasn't arrived yet so you can't register the bike and we can't let you take it. But you can wait to the mail comes today and see if we get it in." And so I thank them for telling me this only AFTER I've wasted a day of work to drive an hour out of my way. The mail comes and I'm ignored. They walk around me like I'm a piece of furniture until I ask, "Well are you going to see if the title's in?" I get, "Um, oh yeah let's see. Nope! Sorry buddy." and they go about their business.

So I head home rippin' mad! Finally when the title comes in I take another day off from work and rush down to take care of the paperwork and get my ride. One of the sales guys gives me attitude while I wait and tells me, "You know, you're getting this bike for cheap money. You should be paying the going rate of $13,500 for this bike." The price had gone way up since I placed a deposit in January and I told him I have the signed slip saying we both agreed to $10,400 and that'all I'm paying.

So finally I get the bike with NO overview of the machine whatsoever from the sales person. Just a "Here's the keys, see ya." Just wanting to get the hell out of there I hop on and follow my buddy to work (about 20 minutes from Brockton Cycle). The damn bike runs out of gas within 10 minutes of leaving the shop! I'm stuck with a spankin' new R1 on the highway with NO GAS! Luckily my buddy went and bought a container and came back to fill me up.

I will NEVER buy another product from Brockton Cycle EVER again and will NEVER recommend them to anybody. The attitude and lousy service I got from Brockton Cycle is something I won't soon forget and I'm happy to share this story with anyone who'll listen. I should have spent the lousy $100 extra to support my local dealer Motorsports International in Auburn who have always been excellent to work with.
Lesson learned...

Bad dealer/good dealer? Time and time again I feel I get burned by the service dept. in Brockton Cycles, main street Brockton. The sales guys are no problem, its the guys in parts and service that need to either get another job, or just leave...first they install a rear tire backwards and complain that there is nothing wrong with that, I guess the tire manufacturers just put an arrow on the side wall to be cute. Second they sell you a 10 year old new tire and think there is nothing wrong when it developes cracks and dry rot after only 6 months... "just get another tire or no sticker for you..." They act as you are bothering them if you have any questions to ask about your bike...specially the parts counter grouches...Then I ak them for two weeks straight to put a rear tire on my sportsbike and all they can say is "show up first come first served on saturday" just to get bypassed by a personal aquaintance arriving late. Dont even ask about the prices they charge...first the tire is at $ 180.00, the receipt later says $ 190.00, I know, big deal, $10.00 lousy bucks! but then they charge you for the service ($40.00) of changing the tire and $50.00 an hour for the mechanics rate. In the end a rear tire came to close to $300.00 dollars, Yikes!! All this while waiting for three hours! Could I go somewhere else? sure. I have found a couple of bike shops operated by a couple of guys who are very reasonable, but I want to support my local dealer too. After all, the magazine guys say we should...

Well thats all I have for now, my experiences with Brockton cycle haven't been positive ones so far, I hope next time is better. I'm still pissed off about the scratch on my rear rim, it wasn't there before the tire change though... I wonder...

I wanted to recommend Motorsports International in Auburn MA. They have been excellent! I have a 1999 R1 and know these guys by name now after having all of my service done through them. This includes adding modifications. When adding a set of Graves frame sliders, I found I would have to drill through the fairing. I wasn't comfortable drilling fearing I'd screw it up. At the same time I was also adding a Eurotail to the bike to get rid of the rear fender. This too meant cutting into the bike. And to take it a step further, I added a Scorpio alarm to the bike and didn't want the hassle of messing with the wiring.

Motorpsorts did it all and they did a perfect job! The bike is mint! They even gave me a set of aftermarket tail lights (the Eurotail I got from '00 didn't come with them) for free and mounted them!

Add to all of that -- when I'm too lazy to change the oil, filter, and tires myself I have these guys do it along with synching of my carbs. They get me in and out quick (usually 1 day!) and the bike always comes out rippin'!

I will admit they can be expensive but I have never been disatisfied with their work. Check'em out!

I give them 2 thumbs up becuase they let me put my bike on layaway for months at a time. they have been nice to me and I found the finance department very friendly. the parts department, on the other hand is run by young pigme kids.. peircings the size of mount rushmore in their ears, chains. etc...... Where is the dress code for this place?? But, other than that if you want a good deal go see DOUG DANGER and only him!! He will give you the best deal around.. I got my bike for half of what its worth they wanted to charge me 5000.00 dollars for it and I asked them all sorts of questions.. Then I find out that second gear is bad.. (later I found out that it wasnt! LOL!!) so they cut a deal with me and I paid every month for the bike. When I got the bike it was preped and ready to go.. oil change etc.... plus I got a 10% discount on my next purchace of products.. As for the service dept.. I wouldn't go there becuase they are always too busy and charge large amounts of cash for repairs.. My experience with them was when I brought a bike in and they said that they wouldnt touch it because it was too old. (go figure) and it would cost almost a grand to fix it.. I said never mind, and started to fix it myself. (on easter this year it was stolen from my yard..) thats what prompted me to buy my NINJA ZX-11 1991 from them.

OH and by the way.. I used to work at performance cycle in shrewsbury, DONT GO THERE!!!! They are always rude to the customer in the parts department becuase of the a**hole there. He doesnt give a rats butt wether you are there or not. As for the sales people, bit of advise, if your not buying a new bike.. dont go in, thats all they are there for.. to sell you a NEW bike, not a used one.. they dont care if your looking for a used bike, they want to sell you a new one.. and if there are used bikes there they are over priced, 2 times over what the book value is! and, wonder where all the used bikes are? they are either in the warehouse or on the auction block!

I am giving this place a BAD rating because I had an accident with my motorcycle that I had purchased there in August of last year, not even a year old. At first, they said that they were waiting on the insurance. That's O.K. Three weeks later I paid them in full. That's when all the stories began. First they where waiting for the parts, that was one week. Then they tell me that my bike is next to get fixed because there was another accident being finished off before my bike could get worked on. They tell me that at the end of the week, before the long weekend, I would have my bike. Well that didn't happen, then on the next business day I go talk to the service manager and he tells me that my bike is the next one to get worked on (sounds familiar) well he tells me a long and drawn out story about them having a little trouble with the other bike. No problem, I then call them the next day and spoke to the service manager and guess what, now my bike won't be fixed for another week because the front calipers have to be rebuilt and surprise the upper fairing is the wrong color. Also when I asked them if they had replaced the brake lever the service manager stated no because there was no damage on that side. Well I asked him if they had looked at it and he stated no because there was no damage on that side of the bike. Funny but I can clearly see that car hitting me on that side and pushing me on to the center divider. Well my bike has been in the shop for almost two months and now they want more money from the insurance. Some service department, they only check what appears to be damaged and nothing else. So needless to say I will not be doing any return business with this place, not even if they are the last Suzuki dealer and service department left on earth. This place is not recommended to anyone not even my enemies.

We have no record of your bike being in here for a crash repair, we do have a repair order for a top triple tree, ignition switch & labor to straighten the front end, however no panels. I do not recommend this place.

In general:
Pushy salespeople. Sickening advertisements repeated over and over while waiting a long time on hold every call (e.g. come on down and "DON'T FORGET YOUR CHECKBOOK!!!").

My specific experience with the service department:
Took my '83 Kawasaki 750LTD in for 10K tune-up on 3/28/01, got it back on 4/18/01 (17 days excluding Sundays! Ok, it is at the beginning of the season). Total price: $539.19. Labor was largest charge: $72.50/hr for 5.5 hours! For "10K service, adjusted valves and synchronized carburetor, stated inspected, test road." Also replaced cylinder head gasket (said they were waiting on that part). They called me once after numerous calls from me to see what's up. Came back with lots of recommendations on what I should do next time.

The WORST PART:
As I attempted to drive out on my newly serviced bike, it died! It turned out to be an electrical problem: some wire(s) were exposed and disconnected/broken/cut near the steering column. There was no problem with those wires when I brought it in so I assume they pinched them while servicing it. They managed to fix it in about 15 minutes, and I have not had any further problems in the two short trips I have ridden since.

This place is the pits! I purchased a rebuilt starter for my goldwing for 3/4 the price of new, "my fault" by exchanging a $30 core savings I was promised the rebuilt was tested like new. After installing the rebuilt in my wing, the same problem existed. I was then told my starter drive was the problem. Having to remove the motor from the bike to do this the starter drive rollers were replaced. Still no go. A friend said to take the starter apart. I did. It was fried inside and not rebuilt. I brought back after a long cool down and was told "I have to talk to the rebuilders before I do anything. I blew up!" Give me my old starter and a brand new one". He "the Owner" told me I will have to wait until he returns the starter that was stamped "rebuilt back to NH . He made me wait 3 days then charged me top $ for a new one after promising me a discount. He still owes me for $30 for my old starter on top. I told him he will never see me in his place again. He said you'll be back "how do I know you didn't exchange the guts from this starter"!!!!!!! Other people have similar stories like, being charged to remount a tire after they put on the wrong tire! Most people say they had no choice but to pay to get their bike home. I also spent a day on a friend's bike to get lights back that Archies shorted when mounting a trailer hitch by pinching the wires with a bracket bolt. It's been a long while , and I never re-entered the place.

I had a very good experience buying my 2000 Suzuki SV650 from Al. It was actually my friend Craig who introduced me to Sky Cycle - I would not have thought of travelling 40+ miles to check out a bike there. But Craig had found out that Al could get an SV650 - which in June 2000 was very hard to find around here. Sure enough - Al managed to get one - and I picked it up the following weekend. The paperwork went very smoothly and quickly, and Al and Fred (who runs the place) were very friendly and cordial; it was a great buying experience - and it had nothing to do with a "good price deal" - because I paid full MSRP for the bike. But again, it is the experience and treatment you get there that is very rewarding. In addition, Sky Cycle has very knowledgeable, capable, and friendly mechanics and gear-sales guys. I have since been back there many times - mostly to buy gear, as well as for my bike's first service. I now know a lot of them; guys like Kevin, Charlie and Aaron were very helpful with tips on how to care for the bike, where to get some aftermarket stuff (like certain brand name mufflers/pipes) that they didn't sell there, etc. It is definitely the little things and the extra mile that they go for you that, in my humble opinion, makes the difference. I whole-heartedly recommend them for buying as well as maintenance/servicing. Two thumbs up. Cheers.

I was looking for my first street bike and was investigating several bikes. After reading a review of my bike (Kawasaki ZR7) from the guys at interactive motorcycle.com, I decided to buy this bike. I live in Maynard, MA so there are really 2 shops to go to. Greater Boston Motorsports, and Sky Cycle. Neither are real close to Maynard so I visited both. Like many of the ads listed on this page, the guys at GBMS are typical salesmen. They'll say anything to get you to buy their product. Well I found a guy who was working there and threw around less BS than the rest so I worked directly with him. When it came to pricing out the bike, GBMS started by adding $500 freight on to the bike and said that they have to pay for freight. I talked to Kawasaki directly and the dealers don't pay for freight. Sky cycle confirmed this. They just want to stick it to their customers. So I got their price and went to Sky Cycle.

Sky Cycle didn't have a ZR7 in stock, but the owner was a really nice guy and after speaking with him 1 time, he took it upon himself to drive to someplace in CT and trade bikes with another dealer to get a ZR7. He then called me up and told me he had a bike and explained to me the whole story. The bike was a 2000 and kinda a leftover, but that was good for me, because he started the price $300 under sticker. When it was all said and done, I bought the bike for $400 under sticker and he threw in a small luggage race for the tail. I highly recommend this dealer.

But the story doesn't end. I bought my bike and for the next several months I got coupons in the mail from the dealer for 10% anything, 15% any purchase, free bike wash, free 12 point check up and so on. I couldn't believe it. I even got a Christmas card with another coupon. Well my money had run out and there was no way I could buy any gear, I had just bought the bike.

The other day I called the shop to talk about buying some road gear. I've ordered a Firstgear Kilamanjaro Jacket from Sky Cycle. While on the phone with them, I asked if they were gonna help me out with this purchase (the Jacket is $325). They asked me if I still had my coupon for 15% off any purchase. I said that I did but that it had expired. They said bring the coupon in when the jacket comes in and we will honor it. I was pumped. It's only like $50 off but every cent helps and it makes the wife happy that I'm getting it for less.

Go see these guys and they will take care of you.

I have had mostly good experiences with this dealer. I bought my 2000 BMW R1100R in April 2000 from them. I first called all the BMW dealers in MA and asked for a quote on that bike with all the options I wanted. They all gave me pretty much the same price. Since I didn't know much about any of the dealers, I chose one based on location and first impression. Actually, Greater Boston Motorsports was the closest BMW dealer to me, but I got a really bad impression of them; the salesmen were really ignorant of the bikes and seemed to just give me whatever answers they thought I'd want to hear. Dunbar was the next closest dealer. Also, they happened to have exactly the bike configuration and color I wanted in stock already.

I don't have that much to say about them as far as quality of work, since I haven't needed much work on my bike yet. Shortly after I bought it, one of the front fork seals started leaking. This was during Laconia Bike Week, so I couldn't get service scheduled until after bike week. But this was understandable since they're a small shop and were running a booth at Laconia. Otherwise, when I need an oil change/scheduled maintenance, they usually schedule me in within a week, and have always been willing to talk to me about equipment or bikes.

The staff at the shop are all motorcycle enthusiasts. The owner of the shop and head mechanic, Tom Fournier, is a pretty successful racer, with a couple of 1st place wins at Daytona in the Pro Thunder series among other things. The main saleswoman, Cathy, is also one of the race managers at Loudon on race weekends. The other mechanic that I've met is also a racer. I always enjoy going in there to chat and browse the latest bikes when they're not too busy.

Now for the negatives. Their accessories prices seem higher than other shops. They also seem excessively focused on racing for my preferences. As such, they seem much more knowledgeable about Ducatis than about BMWs. Since buying my bike, I've discovered that Freeman's Cycles in Beverly, MA seems to be the local BMW expert, and if I had my bike buying to do over again, I might have bought it from them for that reason. For instance, I wanted a passenger backrest for my BMW, and asked Cathy at Dunbar if she knew of one. She just said no, BMW doesn't make one, and they didn't know of any. I then asked Skip at Freeman, and he showed me three different ones I could get from magazines, as well as one he had in stock, and one that they manufactured right there in the shop.

If I were going to get a Ducati though, like the Monster I'd like to get some day, I'd probably get it from Dunbar. I've heard BCM in Laconia is the premiere Ducati mechanic shop around, but I wouldn't want to have to ride 100 miles every time I need some work done. And how would I get back to Boston if I needed to leave the bike there overnight? The commuter rail stops about half a mile from Dunbar's, so it's convenient if you live in the Boston area. Other people I've met who bought their bikes there have also been satisfied with them. The only negative comments I've heard about them have just been impressions, like people going into the shop and thinking it looks too much like a "boutique", whatever that is. Also, others have mentioned that their accessory prices are on the high side. Overall, I think they're a nice shop, run by motorcycle enthusiasts, and I'd recommend buying a bike from them.

I've had a mixed bag or experiences, mostly good.

When I picked up my '98 Trophy last year, the clock didn't work. The new one took two months to arrive and it was the wrong one. I bitched; they got the right one in less than a week and installed it right away. They also got a replacement plastic piece for me in less than a week.

When my oil-pressure light came on, I drove in unannounced and their head Triumph mechanic came right out, diagnosed it as a faulty switch and replaced it; all in about 15 minutes.

Bill Morrow hunted all around to find me this bike, by the way, and he's the #1 U.S. Triumph salesman. He got a trip to England last fall because of that and met the man, John Bloor, in his office.

Some other Triumph owners have tales of woe to tell about PC; maybe I've just been lucky. I'll take luck when I can get it. So, summing up, I'd give PC a B+.

I would not recommend that you go to this dealer. Last year I went in to buy a bike. They had a 98 left over(zx6e ninja). Because It was a left over it was $600 cheaper than a 99. I left a deposit and said I would be back. I came back with CASH for the balance. The salesman asked when I wanted to pick it up. This was on Friday, I said I'd go to the registry and be back Monday morning to pick up the bike.

Monday morning, I walk into the showroom plate in hand and the bike was still dry on the showroom floor. "Oh we are very sorry sir I don't know how this could have happened....blah blah blah..." - Not from the salesman, from the manager. Fine I said I'll be back tomorrow to get it. I have been in a few times since then, and the salesman acts as if he has never seen me before. I got nothing extra, no helmet included, I bought both mine and my wife's, no accessories thrown in, nothing. My first oil change and valve job cost over $200.

My brother in-law went to look at bikes there and because he was only 18 and looked young they wouldn't give him the time of day. I have also been back to buy oil, filters, etc, and the parts dept. guys seem to busy to be bothered to help, and almost put out when you want to pay for something. I went "window" shopping with my wife this past Saturday. First I went to South Shore Motorsports in Quincy, Mass. Talk about zero sales pressure! After 5 minutes of seeing bikes, I had to go grab someone because they let you browse at your own pace. The place is very clean and the display is nicely setup and well lighted. They have an enormous variety of bikes. They have Aprilia, Suzuki, and Kawasaki. The prices are fair and they will deal.

So, 2 thumbs up for South Shore.

Now the ugly. After South Shore my wife suggested going to Greater Boston Motorsports to see what they will do on the exact same bike. Needless to say, as soon as we stepped through the door, we had a 16 year old already greeting us with a huge smile. "can I help you with anything"? The salesman inflated the prices by attaching unrealistic costs to the bike's MSRP. For example, our salesman proceeded to write the bike's full MSRP and added $572 dollars of freight & setup (?!)... He mentioned that amount real fast, trying to sneak it in.

Anyway, the price was over inflated, making almost impossible to get a good deal. He asked repeatedly about a down payment, which he pointed out was reimbursable. Anyway I made my offer, he came back with another, we made another even lower, and he sent us home :). He said that our offer would be "below their costs". Which I must point out is not true. Lots of laughs, though.

Greater Boston Motorsports get 2 thumbs DOWN.

Long story short: South Shore gave us a better deal without any hassling or BS'ing. They were nice, professional and polite. I recommend them although I must point out that I have no experience with their service department.

Every consideration is given to doing business in a way which will get you to come back over and over. He prefers to make his money from you incrementally. My experience with Doug was unusual of a man operating a business with the intent to make money. I believe that he does some of his antics purely for amusement. I could see it in his eyes how he enjoyed toying with me.

When I brought in my motor and incurred the unsuspecting and high fee for an estimate, Doug lectured me on how he has to pay his people, how it takes time to write an estimate, time is money etc. Nothing he said was wrong. He was not up front about the fee. It was a sneaky thing he did.

I work in the construction business. The company I work for bids on projects. It often takes 3 or more of our well paid managers, mechanical engineers and an estimator tens of hours per person to put together a bid proposal. And we don't win every bid. In Dougs world, every bid is a money maker.

Someone I know well was a happy customer...at first. He bought a new 93' (think) ZX11. Two years ago he had a problem with it. He left it with Doug. He had to bring it back twice before it ran correctly. They would not test ride a customers motorcycle.

Shortly after that this same person was restoring an antique Harley. He left the front wheel with Doug and company to have it straightened. He was assured it would be no problem. Five months later his wheel was still in Phillipston and all he got back was excuses. Pardon me....reasons for not keeping his end of the bargain.

For obvious reasons this must not happen to everyone. Cycle Design is a very successful operation.

Baer's Cycle Sales - Yamaha / Kawasaki
11 Harvey Street
Springfield, Mass 413-783-2520
www.baerscycle.com

I have been shopping at Baer's since 1986. Even when I rode Suzuki's I bought all my parts there. Over the years, I have purchased 5 motorcycles from them. My mother even bought a Vulcan from them, and now buys her Honda parts from them. I shop there because I know that I will always get the best deal possible on my parts and they go out of their way to make sure that I am happy. I have never had a bad experience with them. The deals I received on the bikes I purchased from them could not be matched by any other dealer. The service dept. is also competent and have even allowed me to peek in and watch them working on my machine ! Now, even though I do most of my own work, they still treat me very well, not like I'm taking money out of their pocket. And they will continue to get all of my business.

RLGUENTHER@aol.com - WILL NEVER again shop at:

Greater Boston Motorsports
Mass Ave
Arlington, MA

Stay away from these guys......The hassle and the dubious sales tactics leave a bad taste.....They pushed and pushed for maintenance contracts, GAP insurance, rider insurance, life insurance and a lot of other finance type charges that pushed the cost of the 1992 Honda Shadow VT1100 I purchased from $5,495 to over $7,500 and that's before the finance charges.

The attitude of the service department manager is fossilized, in other words, he's a dinosaur, just a few days, it seems from retirement. He didn't listen to the problems I was having with the bike, just made his assumption that I ran out of gas. Turns out, the airflow was interrupted due to incorrect service from another dealer. Just bad business to push your opinion of a problem prior to diagnostics onto a customer, referring that he is an idiot.

Ahmet talks about a few dealers....

I bought my BMW from Freeman Cycles in Beverly, Mass. When I bought it the owner, Skip, was out on a cross country trip. The sales manager, Rusty, was very helpful, and did not have any hard sales tactics. I called him up out of the blue, from the yellow pages, and he let me test ride a R1150GS, a K1200LT and a R1100RT. When I brought my GS back for the 600 mile service he gave me the K1200LT as a loaner bike. In general, they are a small shop with very well educated mechanics, no add-ons to their pricing, and with lots of spare parts. The best part .. they have a Christmas party every year with free food and drinks :):)

Even though Greater Boston Motorsports and others are closer to me, I prefer to ride the 50 miles if I need service. Freeman gets a 9/10 (they lost points for telling me that I should use only BMW motor oil)

Anderson Cycle Works is my local Yamaha guy for the past 6 years. There have been times where they kept the shop open past 9 pm to get me ready for a Iron Butt Rally. The owner is Carlton. He is pretty good, but they are in desperate need for more motorcycle mechanics. They have a very nice dynamic tire balancer, and their tire prices are pretty good. I prefer to get my rubber from them. Anderson gets 8/10 (They need to organize themselves better)

Dunbar Motorsports in Brockton, Mass adds about $500 dealer prep, their sales people act and look like they were hired from the appliance section of your local Sears store. While I was looking for bikes there, they were trying to sell a kid, who had never been on a motorcycle before, a Ducati 900SS. Dunbar gets a 3/10 .. well they sell motorcycles after all...

My experience with Greater Boston Motorsports parts was not too bad. I have been able to find things there I could not find anywhere else. Their sales people are clueless... Sales Manager, I don't know his name.. guy with a full beard, is o.k
