I have a better one for you regarding Adams Honda. I purchased a used 2002 Honda Silverwing in PA, and called Adams as the local dealer and asked them to run the vin number for me to see if the rear rim recall had been on this bike. I was given the run around and reluctantly they took my information and said they would have to call Honda and check and they would call me back. I left them my work number so they could get back to me in person during business hours and it also has 24 hour voice mail.

Well I waited and waited and waited and after a week I called back and they acted as if I never even called them and when I pressed the issue that this is a safety issue then they remembered and got, "Oh yeah haven't gotten around to calling Honda will call now and get back to you", well I waited and waited another week and called back and again they acted like they never heard of me. Then when I asked to speak to the owner they all of a sudden remembered. The word I got then was" Oh your bike is OK don't worry about it".

Well I wasn't easy about this and as I was in Manchester picking up parts I asked the service manager the same question and he asked me for the VIN number and then went into the back and came out in 5 mins and said nope the bike has not had the rim recall done let me Schedule it for you ASAP as this is a safety issue and should be done.

I stopped back to Adam's to see the manager or owner and found two teenagers behind the counter who knew nothing and had them get the manager who came out to speak to me all the while shoveling pasta into his face while talking to me from a plastic bowl. I told him the information I got from the store and he said that he was the guy I spoke to. I told him he gave me faulty information and shouldn't be a Honda dealer. What if the Rim failed because I rode it on his information? I made sure everyone heard me in the store.

Paul's problem was some cash but trust me this was a safety issue. THis dealer should have his Honda Dealership pulled and not be allowed to operate for safety sake alone. Not to mention what he has done to the Honda reputation in CT.

File this one under BAD Dealers. Where do I start? This was probably the worst experience I ever had dealing with a business. I purchased a 2002 CBR F4i in April from Adams of Oakville. I had asked about any special promotions through Honda, which I was told Honda does not offer promotional incentives. That evening when I left the dealer, I decided to check online with American Honda Corp. SURE ENOUGH, they were offering the Buck$ deal, $300 towards purchase price or accessories for the new bike. I then called and spoke with the salesman who had helped me, and was told he did not know of any specials, but would check and let me know when I came in to pick up my bike. @ days later, my bike was ready and I went in for delivery and was told flat out that the "$300 Bonus Bucks would come out of the dealers pocket, not Honda's." I decided to check with other dealers, so I visited Manchester Honda in Manchester CT and the salesmen there were not only happy to help me out, but gave me a copy of the letter from Honda stating Honda reimburses the dealer the $300...I'll follow up with my Kudos to Manchester next. I promptly returned to a very busy dealership at Adams and asked for a copy of the sales receipt, because my copy contained no info on the bonus bucks...Strange though, the copy that was being submitted to Honda for reimbursement DID contain the wording $300 Bonus Bucks used. Could this be FRAUD?? I let the salesman know, either I get the $300 or I would 'make a scene' in the dealership and contact American Honda and let them know about the "mix-up". I was given all kinds of stories about how I got a great deal on the bike, yadda, yadda, yadda...In the end, I finally got the $300 and had 30 days to use it or lose it. I used most of it, notified Honda of the dealer and found two other dealerships who are more than happy to please me with their business.

Willow's Motorsports I HIGHLY recommend, at least the service area, which is really where I have dealt with them. I was having the CCT problems that you hear about on the new F4i's and brought it to Willow's for repair. I had met the service technician once, and when I appeared 2 months later to drop my bike off, the guy knew me, my name and why I was there....This is after having met me 2 months earlier! They had my bike ready in 2 days. I told them to take their time, I wasn't in a rush to have the bike repaired (I had another one to ride) but he squeezed my bike into his extremely busy schedule. The service manager also informed me that they were buying used bikes and made me an offer on my first F4i which they were repairing...

I highly recommend John Borella of Borella Enterprises. John has a low key, low (really low) overhead shop where he sells Staintune, Givi, Gen-Mar and other goodies. Well known in BMW circles for his restoration work, John can offer more than that. He is truly a motorcycle guy first and loves to talk about bikes. John is also the proud owner of a new Aprilia Futura and owns numerous Ducatti and BMW motorcycles. If you need painting, body work, accessories, etc. give him a try. He is located in scenic South Killingly, CT right on Rt 6. (also known as the Providence Pike)

John Borella does complete mechanical and paint restoration work and has many satisfied customers. He's also a dealer for GIVI, Epco, Staintune, Remus, PIAA, Brembo, Scottoiler, Eurotech, Works Performance, Heated Grips and more. He's well respected and known for quality work.

Cycle Gear

I neither recommend nor reject Cycle Gear. My comments are meant to show that Cycle Gear is now under new ownership and is now part of a chain (not for the better).

I read Sean Ford's endorsement of Cycle Gear in Canton, CT with interest. I too, have had lots of good dealings with Alburt. However, about a year ago the business was sold to a chain (also called Cycle Gear) and Burt and the guys who made the shop are now gone. What remains is a motorcycle boutique where you may be happy if you are just looking for Frank Thomas leathers and lots of little bits that all come in plastic packages. Alburt woudn't recognize the place.

Burt Ives & Sons Honda
22 Rt. 66 East

Ives Honda is a small family run dealership. Of the 6 or 7 employees, only one, the sales manager, isn't a family member. In April 1999, I purchased a new CBRF4 from them. Admittedly, the timing wasn't on my side for the best of deals. Dealerships were just ramping up for the prime selling season and I knew that. I just wanted to get a fair deal.

I had been to two other dealers getting prices and they were asking MSRP plus all the other BS charges, including prep, freight, conveyance, etc. I went to Ives and sat down and worked out a reasonable deal. In the end, although I paid MSRP, I didn't pay any other add-on fees except for the unavoidable tax, title, and tag. This was the best deal going at the time and I took delivery of one of the first F4s in the area. My experience with Ives Honda was hassle free. They dealt with me fairly, delivered the motorcycle on time, and that was that.

The only other item of note was when I went in to pick up an oil filter for the first oil change. The woman behind the counter told me that Honda required the dealer to do the first service to establish a service record for the bike. I knew this was complete rubbish and asked to see the policy in print. She could not comply with my request, but insisted it was true. I later contacted Honda customer service to check on this so-called policy and as I thought, it did not exist. I wasn't very pleased with her. But, I've since been back to buy more filters (haven't had any need for anything else) and I just avoid dealing with this woman when I can. It's interesting to note that her attitude towards me has changed considerably since our first encounter. I think Honda contacted the dealer after I talked to them about it. Everyone else is pleasant and knowledgeable. I won't let this one bad apple spoil the bunch. Ives is a good, but not stellar, dealership, and I would buy another motorcycle from them.

Since it's about the only accessory shop in the area, and closest to me, I had been taking for granted the place. After having been to other shops around, they are top rate. They don't do much mechanically, just tires really. But they do accessories, clothing, parts (even OEM stuff) and very reasonable prices. Yes, you can beat them with mail order, but I've had such good customer service I prefer to pay a few extra $$. Two cases in point, I bought a one piece rain suit, took it to Americade, got rained on plenty, took it back to exchange it for a larger one, no problem. It was still in perfect condition. Bought handlebars for my wife's bike, couldn't get them to fit, again, full refund, no hassle. There are limits of course, but I've always been happy with what they can do.

While Joel and Co. know they are the only Ducati/Triumph dealer in their area and have been solvent for some time, once you buy (at fairly reasonable prices), basically unless you're an affluent yuppie with only a smattering of knowledge (like Joel?) you're done. Always accommodating over the phone, the in-shop reality is "It'll get done when we feel like it, at top dollar." If it's not in stock, various why-tales ensue, as in why they can't get GiaCaMoto parts, why you shouldn't put on exhausts they won't carry, why they won't assist with detail enhancements etc. I have several friends who can back this up, all are experienced "europhiles", greatly frustrated.

Pushing new bikes is noooo problem however, just be sure you dress well; I went in in my (old) riding gear and was interested in an old bevel 900, needed resto, sitting in the middle of the showroom, and expressed interest. Joel: "I wouldn't sell you that bike, it's a pain in the ass." (??) "But come over here, you'd love this new Speed Triple!" I had to tell him I was adjusting desmos before he got his MBA...cold shoulder followed. This is my experience, perhaps others fare better, my attitude is "Proceed with caution!"

Cycle Gear

I feel that its appropriate at this time to plug Cycle Gear in CT for outstanding customer service. I'm a happy customer and here's why: In January, I purchased a pair of Triumph Leather Sport Jeans (dynamite riding drawers, btw), but as it turns out they did not fit correctly when I was sitting on my FatKat600, so I sent them back. I had requested a price quote from Cycle Gear, back in late January, on a pair of FirstGear Flightline pants (at that point I wasn't sure if I was going to keep the Triumph pants because they did not zip into my jacket). Alburtt at Cycle Gear responded with an unbelievably low price of $251 + $4 shipping, retail is listed at $379.99. About a week and a half ago, I decided to return the Triumph pants and pursue the FirstGear pants with Cycle Gear. I called and spoke with Alburtt and he confirmed the great price over the phone, so I ordered two pairs: a 34 and 36.

Meanwhile, I posted the great price to the list and Ken Mitchell took off for Cycle Gear to pick up some pants at a great price. Unfortunately for Ken, that price was not available and he left a bit unhappy, though even he will admit that the Cycle Gear folks treated him fairly and with respect, they just couldn't give him that price. The pants arrived at my house a couple of days later (only $5 to ship for two pairs!) with a note from Alburtt on the ship slip. Basically, the note explained that Alburtt had misquoted the pants and the $251 price was BELOW dealer cost. This sale was actually going to cost Cycle Gear some money. So, I chose my pants, and then received a message from Ken Mitchell asking to purchase the other pair. At the time, I didn't feel right about selling the other pair, since the "deal" stipulated that I would be returning one pair of pants to Cycle Gear and since it was costing them money it didn't seem right to double the loss for those guys. I told Ken that I would check with Alburtt before proceeding with any kind of sale.

I called Alburtt and thanked him for honoring the misquoted price. Honestly, I think a lot of places would've called me and explained the mistake and changed the price, but Alburtt apparently puts the Cycle Gear reputation and customer before profit. In the short term, that policy doesn't seem to make sense, but in the long term it's a great way to build a loyal customer base. During my conversation with Alburtt, HE suggested that at the price he sold those pants, I should keep both and try to sell the other pair to a friend. Wow. Ken Mitchell is now the proud owner of a pair of FirstGear Flightline pants size 34, and he couldn't be happier. Geez, the guy was beaming when he left my house last night. He even threw in a Macanudo cigar for my "trouble"!

So, I win, Ken wins, Cycle Gear loses and wins. Cycle Gear lost some money on this transaction, but they've won two loyal customers and some free advertising and good will through this message directed to this list. And I told two people, and you told two people, and so on, and so on...

There you have it. Cycle Gear [http://www.cyclegear.com] in CT is a stand up organization that has done right by me and Ken Mitchell, two subscribing members of the SRNE.
