New to this forum...great info.
Have about 20k on a 2000 SV, most on a trip from West Coast to East and SE. Past experience (20+ yrs) have been with an old Triumph, a CB500, and Honda Silverwing.
Two issues with the SV.....would enjoy your comments regarding..
. Winds seem to really make for a scary ride at times. I've been literly moved from one lane to another in a split second even with full concentration and white knuckle anticipation. Must be the a factor of the light weight of this particular bike?
. Riding on gravel roads has been a real disapointment. Probably the fact I'm getting less skillful with age, but I rode all over on back roads with the Triumph. Are the lower 60 series tires a big issue in this? Or the weight forward ride position (naked bike version compared to upright Triumph and Silverwing). After a couple of mishaps I've learned to stay off the front brake! I expected, and have heard of, this bike being a good potential for some fire road type excursions but I haven't found it that way. Any mods or techniques you guy's can suggest?
Thanks in advance

your arms must be shorter than mine. some handlebar risers or different handlebars may be in order to improve your ergonomics, note though that you will probably have to lenghten the brake line from the reservoir.
prolly the most important thing you can do to improve gravel road riding is tires
Pirelli MTR60's are best, you will have to go to a 120/70 up front and they won't last long in summer on dry pavement.. they can get greasy too. but they are the best off road and wet tire you will find
Avon Distanzia's not as good as the pirelli for off road and wet, but better than regular street tires and will work good on dry pavement, you also would have to go to a 120/70 with the distanzia
I don't have as much of a problem with wind blowing me around on my SV as I do my 500+ XV920R that is taller and catches more wind

almost 97,000 miles, still running like a charm. I think I will be replacing clutches soon, I feel slight slippage in hard decelleration. I'm not complaining, still with the original clutch
I replaced throttle tube, cables and clutch perch, lever & cable earlier this year, they were just worn out & sloppy

Very impressive mileage. I thought my 1976 R75/6 with 108,000 miles was good, but the SV looks like a great deal.

in your forum you claim that the top speed on your sv is 128 i'm going to disagree just yesterday i had my nearly stock 2002 sv up to about 134 and thats where I backed off I think it could go alittle more but i ran out of straight away room

th 128.6 that I attained was in 5th gear on a calibrated speedo, I could only get 125 out of top gear, observed speeds on the stock speedo ae optomistic by as much as 10% maybe a little more, I've seen 135 observed but kno beter than thin the stock speedo is accurate
I suggest getting a sigma you can calibrate or a GPS to record accurate top speeds

RandyO, I think that your countershaft sprocket wear is normal, relative to your rear sprocket. My gixxer uses a 14/42 combination. That is exactly three times the number of teeth from front to rear. Those front teeth are doing the same work as the rear teeth, so I would expect them to wear faster than the rear. Don't worry about lube on your front sprocket. I have a Scott oiler also, and at the setting I have it at, {approx. 1 drop every 45 seconds} there is more than enough oil being flung up front. My side stand has never worked better, Ha Ha!
