Back in 1986, this bike was a revolution! |
I recently sold the 1987 Yamaha FZR1000. My third FZR in ten
years. I have had enough of FZR's and was looking to move on. Neat bikes, but a
pain to work on. This one has been in my garage since last summer and I had
gotten as far as stripping the frame, cleaning it, installing a new wire harness
and spare engine. The bike was rough, real rough but I know them very well. I
knew them so well that during that summer I sold TWO pick-up trucks worth
of FZR parts for $300.00. Ten years worth of parts. I had planned to buy a new
bike, and the FZR just held no more interest for me. A quick posting on the SRNE
For Sale Forum found a buyer in Bob from Empire
GP. He does sportbike repair and this FZR would make a great parts bike.
Sight unseen, he sent me a check. Bob is my new best friend!
I did not plan on buying this Suzuki. I was looking at picking
up a new Kawasaki ZX-12R or a Moto Guzzi Daytona. However, a guy at the Post
Office I pick up from was asking me if I had wanted his old GSXR-1100 for cheap.
Curious, I went and looked it The bike was rough, but was all there. The price
was $1800.00 and I picked it up that Saturday afternoon. Fred also owns a Moto
Guzzi and a Concours, so he can't be too bad of a guy!

Here is what I saw that fateful night. The odometer
read 17,554 miles. The GSXR had two previous owners. The bike has
sat for six years inside. The No Fear sticker just sealed the deal... |
After the Suzuki was loaded in the back of the official SRNE
Support Vehicle, Fred also gave me a new battery that was still in the box, and
new oil filter and a Clymer service manual. As I was driving away, I could have
swore I heard Fred's wife give a loud cheer. Hmmmm......
I did it. I have ANOTHER Suzuki GSXR. It slowly sunk in.
This would be my fifth air/oil GSXR. I previously had a 1986 and 1987 GSXR-750,
and two 1987 GSXR-1100's. One of the 750's I turned into a 1986 7/11 ( 1100
motor in a 750 chassis). That bike had EVERYTHING. However, I was tired of the
old GSXR's and wanted to try something different. Hence, FZR1000's. I was not
sorry. Not remorseful. I wanted this GSXR and now I have it. On the way home,
the van smells of very old fuel. I look behind and there is a puddle of fuel on
the van floor. I pull over and find the petcock is on PRIME. I put it on ON and
head home. A bad sign?
The bike is unloaded and photo's are now taken. I also get a
good chance to look everything through. What is the bike missing, and what will
it need? Tires are good Metzelers, but they have sit for a long time. No chain
guard, bad footpeg bracket, a U-Haul trailer license plate light, various wrong
fasteners, some mis-matched bodywork. Needs a fork seal, battery is shot. The
dash lights come on, but the bike won't turn over ( probably the clutch safety
switch - bypass it later).
The right side rider footpeg is actually a passenger peg, the
right side middle has a couple cracks in it, the left side panel that goes over
the footpeg is missing all of its mounting tabs and is zip-tied to the bike. The
CDI is encased in plastic that was stolen from Mom's Tupperware supply, too. The
fairing upper is in good shape, and the lowers are also in good shape, just
scratched. A lot of little things to make one slightly nuts, but then I expected
this. The bike is in good shape overall. The motor looks good, and the frame
looks fine. The wheels and brakes are straight, and all the calipers have good
pads in them. All three rotors are also in good shape. At this point, I am still
thinking about bringing the bike back to stock condition. However, this will
change shortly....
